CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Dorothy was walking out of the office when I returned. “Well, it’s about time. I thought I’d have to come find you. What did you find out? Did you turn the tracker off? Don’t do that.”

“I didn’t find out much. Other than that I have to research a murder and meet a mysterious woman at the marina at eight tonight. Oh, and I’m supposed to have a date with Eric.”

Her eyes widened. “You are not going to go out with him, are you? I changed my mind on that. It’s too dangerous.”

I shrugged as I walked into the office. “We’ll see what happens at the marina, I suppose.”

Dorothy followed me back into the office. “Tell me everything.”

I explained everything that had happened. Needless to say, Dorothy wasn’t happy with any of it.

Dorothy sighed. “Well, if you must meet this woman at the marina then at least let me go and watch with my binoculars. If I see something happening, then I can save you.”

“If you see something happening, then you can call the police.”

I’d probably regret this. In the meantime, while I wanted for time to go to the marina, I decided to do a little research on Mark the murdered man. a quick search online and I found the newspaper article about the man’s death. Despite that the murder had taken place in a public place, they still hadn’t caught the killer. The man had walked right into the bar with a mask covering his face and shot Mark. Once I saw Mark’s picture in the article, instantly he looked familiar. But I couldn’t put my finger on where I’d seen him before. I knew I’d seen him somewhere though. I hoped it came back to me. Then, suddenly I remembered. His picture had been on the wall at the matchmaking service.

Apparently, he had been one of their clients. What were the odds of that? Something told me that wasn’t a coincidence. I needed to speak with Tiffany. Something was going on at that matchmaking service and I intended to find out.

I picked up the phone and called Jake. He answered the phone right away.

“How are you doing, babe?” he asked.

“I’m great, great, listen, I got a question for you,” I said.

“Let me have it,” he said.

“What do you know about the murder of Mark Massey? Do you know anything about the case?”

“I’m aware of it, yes. What do you want to know?”

“Do you have any idea who killed him? Are there any leads?” I asked.

“Other than it just being organized crime? No. You know no one’s going to talk in those situations. Why do you want to know?”

“Oh, I just heard someone talk about it and I was curious.”

“Something tells me there’s more to this than you’re letting on,” he said.

“Nope, that’s it.” I said. “Okay, well, I have to go.”

“Maggie,” he said sternly.

“Yes, Jake?” I said.

He sighed. “Never mind.”

“Bye, love you,” I said and ended the call.

Now what would I do to find out about Mark? With shaking hands, I frantically typed in Mark’s name and location into my computer.
